Carl Lebrecht Schwabe was the son of Traugott Leberecht Schwabe, the Court Lawyer of Weimar. After hhis mother's early death he grew up with his grandmother. he was educated privately and at the gymnasium in Weimar. He studied in Jena and entered civil service in Weimar. From 1820 to 1838 he was the mayor of Weimar. He admired Schiller and in 1826 he took care of the transfer of what were thought to be Schiller's bones from the Kassengewölbe to the Fürstengruft.
