Son of Anton Genast. He had a bass-baritone voice and in 1814 he debuted as Osmin in Weimar. From 1818 to 1828 he worked in Leipzig. He married the singer Karoline Christine Böhler and they had five children. After a short time in Magdeburg he obtained an engagement for life in Weimar in 1829. From 1833 to 1851 he was the director of opera's in Weimar. In 1864 he left the theatre, but he continued owrking as a composer until his death in 1866 in the house of his daughter Doris Raff. 29/3/1828 | Premiere of Heinrich Marschner's opera "Der Vampyr". Eduard Genast played the vampire, Lord Ruthven. The opera was based on the play "Der Vampir oder die Totenbraut" (1821) by Heinrich Ludwig Ritter. The play was based on the short story "The Vampyre" (1819) by John Polidori.
