Walter Brandon Thomas came from a poor family and worked as a ships carpenter. Against his father's wishes he left for London te become an actor. In 1885 he toured in the USA with the company of Rosina Vokes.

Apart from working as an actor he wrote several plays. His best known work is "Charley's Aunt" (1892), a comedy about travesty. In the play he played the part of Sir Francis Chesney himself. It was successful on Broadway as well as in London. In 1930 and 1941 film versions of this play were released.
