Edgar Scauflaire was the son of the tailor Pierre Philippe Scauflaire. His mother was a seamstress. He studied at the Collège Saint-Louis in Liège, but he did not finish his studies there. He joined an amateur theatre troupe and in the evenings he studied at the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Liège. His teachers included Auguste Donnay, Émile Berchmans, Adrien de Witte and François Maréchal. He also worked as a journalist for "The Meuse". He befriended Georges Simenon, who frequented the same artistic circles in Liège. Until 1925 he concentrated on drawing. He created portraits and allegorical works, and he illustrated literary works. After 1925 he focussed on oil paintings and murals. He decorated the large room of the Salle Philharmonique de Liège. He exhibited in many countries, and he was a member of the jury at the Universal Exhibition in Brussels in 1958. He died in Liège in 1958. |
