Karl Bennewitz von der Loefen was the son of the portrait painter of the same name (1826-1895). He studied at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and at te Art Academy in Düsseldorf, where he was taught by Wilhelm Sohn, Eduard von Gebhardt, Julius Roeting and Carl Ernst Forberg.

For ten years he worked as a painter in Munich and in 1898 he settled in Berlin, where he was a teacher at the school for female artists. He married landscape painter Emy Schlieper (1853-1899). In 1899 he painted the French singer Yvette Guilbert.
