Robert Dohme studied at the University of Berlin and at the Bauakademie in that city. He was promoted in 1868 and continued his studies in Rome. In 1871 he was appointed royal librarian in Berlin and in 1883 he became the director of the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, but in 1884 he left to become the director of the royal art collections of Prussia.

He wrote extensively on art, but by 1888 his health had detoriated and he died in 1893 in Konstanz. After his death his widow Emma had a literary salon in Berlin.
