Marcel Broodthaers was a little successful poet for twenty years before he decided to become an artist in 1963. He started creating objects and in 1864 his first exhibition took place. He had created his first movie in 1957 and from 1967 onwards more than 50 short films followed.

From 1969 he mainly lived in Düsseldorf, Berlin and London. Until 1975 he created large environmental pieces. In 1975 his exhibition L’Angelus de Daumier" took place at the Centre National d’Art Contemporain in Paris. He died in 1976 on his 52th birthday. His tombstone at Ixelles, Brussels is of his own design.
