Ludwig von der Pfordten studied Law in Heidelberg and Erlangen. In 1836 he became professor of Roman Law in Würzburg. In 1843 he was appointed professor in Leipzig and he became recor of the university in 1845. He was also the leader of the liberal movement in Saxony and he became minister of Internal Affairs under Karl von Braun. In 1849 he was appoointed minister of Foreign Affairs in Bavaria and in december of that year he became prime minister as well. After his attempts to create a third power between Prussia and Austria failed he resigned in 1859. After Ludwig II came to power in 1864 he appointed him prime minister once more, but he resigned again after the defeat of the Bavarian troops against the Prussians in 1866. He died in 1880 in Munich. His son was the natural philosopher Otto von der Pfordten. |
