Gilberto Gravina was the son of Biagio Gravina and Blandine von Bülow, the daughter of Hans von Bülow and Cosima Liszt. He grew up with Siegfried Wagner, Richard Wagner's son, in Bayreuth. He studied mechanics at Dresden and Leipzig and at the same time Siegmund von Hausegger trained him as a conductor. During the First World War he served in the Italian army. After his return to Germany he worked as an orchestra conductor. His first wife was Clara Voigt (1883-1931) and they had a son, Hans Amadeus di Rammaca (20/10/1919-16/10/1950). His second wife was Dorothea Briggs (5/4/1905-1990). With her he had three children including their son Christopher (b.1934). When he sided with Germany during the Second World War she left him and took the children with her. They never saw each other again. During the war Gravina lived in his house in Meran. Later he lived in Bayreuth again where he worked as a musical assistant sat the Wagner Festspiele. He died in 1972 in Bayreuth and Dorothy attended his funeral. |
