George Birkbeck was born into a quaker family in Settle, Yorkshire. His father was a banker and he trained for the medical profession at the Medical School of the University of Edinburgh. He was appointed professor of natural philosophy at Anderson University in Glasgow, but in 1804 he settled in London.

There he worked as a physician until 1823. In 1823 he was a founder of the London Mechanics Institute and he became its first president. It is now part of the University as London as Birkbeck College. He died at home in London in 1841.
