James Cloppenburg was the son of Heinrich Cloppenburg (1844-1922), who settled in the Netherlands in 1867. In 1869 he founded the clothers store Peek & Cloppenburg together with J.T. Peek (1845-1907).

In 1901 James Cloppenburg opened his own store at the Gertraudenstrasse in Berlin. He offered uniform clothing sizes, which was new at the time. His company was integrated in is father's business that had started a branche in Düsseldorf in 1901. Eventually he took over the management of the entire Peek & Cloppenburg company. After his own death in 1926 his son James Cloppenburg jr. (1902-1986) became the owner of the stores.
