RESTAURATEUR (AUSTRIAN EMPIRE)
BORN 20 Mar 1833 - DIED 19 Jan 1894
GRAVE LOCATION Berlin: Alter Domfriedhof der St.-Hedwigs-Gemeinde, Liesenstrasse 8 (WG Feld Mauer 2)

Matthias Bauer came from Vienna. He was the manager of the first Viennese café in Berlin in hotel Kaiserhof at the Wilhelmsplatz before he started his own Café Bauer at the corner of the Friedrichstrasse and Unter den Linden. In 1883 it became the first public venue in Berlin with electric light. Later he opened a second Café Bauer at the Bellevuestrasse. In 1885 he had also opened a café in Frankfurt am Main and in 1887 Karlsruhe followed.

His monument at the St. Hedwig-Friedhof in Berlin still shows the bullet holes from fighting in Berlin at the end of the Second World.
