Son of the opera singer Karl Formes and father of the actress Margarethe Formes. He grew up in Vienna and in 1858 joined a group of travelling actors against the wishes of his parents. He wandered around until he held engagements in Stettin and Wiesbaden. In 1861 he worked at the Stadttheater in Breslau and from 1863 to 1865 under Karl Treumann in Vienna. From 1865 to 1867 he was back in Wiesbaden and engagements in Berlin, Dresden and in 1878 at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg followed. After his return to Berlin he worked for the Schiller Theater and for the Berlin Theater. He died in 1898 in Berlin and was buried at the St. Hedwig Cemetery. The bronze relief from Johannes Boese had disappeared from his grave. |
