Younger brother of Günther Genssler, who taught him drawing. He studied under Wilhelm Tischbein in Eutin and under Siegfried Bendixen in Hamburg. Like his brother he was a founding member of the Hamburger Künstlervereins in 1832.

He mostly painted of landscapes and moralistic scenes. His happy and idyllic country scenes were bought by his rich customers.
