Hughes Pernath was an editor of the avant-garde literary magazine "Gard Sivik" ("Civil Guard") , that he founded with Paul Snoek (1933-1981), and also of "Het Cahier". Later he worked for the "Nieuw Vlaams Tijdschrift". In 1960 he published "De adem ik". In 1973 he became a member of the Antwerp based Pink Poets.

His early work was pessimistic and modern mannerist. Later his work became more structured and accessible. He received several awards and the Hugues C. Pernath Prize was named after him.
