Friz Bracht was the son of a physician. He studied law in Würzburg and Berlin. He worked at the courts of law in Essen and Hamm and in Berlin as an advisor to the government. He wasa member of the Deutsche Zentrumspartei (German Centre Party) and in 1924 he became mayor of Essen.

In 1932 he left the Zentrumspartei and he resigned his mayorship. In October 1932 he became a minister without a portfolio in the cabinet of Franz von Papen. Under Kurt von Schleicher he was Reichsminister for the Interior for a short time. When Hindenburg appointed Hitler as chancellor in 1933 he was forced to resign. He died later that year.
