Son of the portrait painter Carl Heinrich Morgenstern (1769-1813). In Hamburg he worked for Cornelius Suhr and with him he travelled in Europe. He was taught lithography and learnt landscape painting from Siegfried Bendixen. In 1827 he travelled to Norway and he studied until 1828 in Kopenhagen. After his return to Hamburg he moved to Munich in 1830.

There he was influenced by Karl Rottman. Among his best known paintings is "Mondnacht in Partenkirchen". He married Louise von Lüneschloß in 1844. The painter Carl Ernst Morgenstern was their son. Author Christian Morgenstern is his grandson.
