After a difficult youth Johann Andreas Schmeller obtained a position as a teacher abroad. After the fall of Napoleon he studied the Bavarian dialect and in 1821 he published "Die Mundarten Bayerns" ("Bavarian dialects").

His Bavarian dictionary was published between 1827 and 1837. In 1828 he became a teacher at the University of Munich and he held this position until his death of cholera in 1852.
