Wilhelm von Scholz was the son of Adolf von Scholz, who was Finance Minister of Prussia. He grew up with his family in Berlin before he moved to Schloss Seeheim in Konstanz with his father in 1890. He attended the gymnasium in Konstanz, and he studied literary history and philosophy in Berlin, Lausanne and Kiel. In 1897 he received his doctorate in Munich with a dissertation on Annette von Droste- Hülshoff. he married Irmgard Waldmüller in 1897. They had two children but by 1910 they lived apart. His play "Der Jude von Konstanz" was first performed in 1905 in Dresden. He wrote poems and novels as well. In 1916 he became the director of the Court Theatre in Stuttgart. From 1922 he lived with the pianist Gertie Richter at Villa Seeheim. After he divorced Irmgard, they finally married in 1939. After the nazis came to power in 1933 he signed the declaration of loyalty. He was one of the authors of the propaganda pamphlet "Sechs Bekenntnisse zum neuen Deutschland" ("Six Confessions to the New Germany"). From 1935 to 1937 he co-edited "Die grossen Deutschen" ("The Great Germans"). In 1939, he wrote a poem for Adolf Hitler's 50th birthday. In 1941 he became a member of the NSDAP. He received a honorary doctorate from Heidelberg University in 1944. After the war he was classified as a "fellow traveler". He became president of the Association of German Playwrights and Composers in 1949. In 1959 the city of Konstanz established a Wilhelm von Scholz Prize in honor of his 85th birthday. In 1964 he received the honorary citizenship of Konstanz because there was opposition in the city council. He considered himself unjustly attacked. He died in 1969 in Konstanz. His widow Getrud died in 1986. |
