Influencial Art Nouveau painter. Stuck studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich as a pupil of Ferdinand Barth (1878-1881) and at the Münchner Kunstakademie, where he was taught by Wilhelm von Lindenschmit and Ludwig von Löfftz (1881-1885). He started as a graphical artist and worked as a cartoonist for the Fliegende Blätter magazine (1887-1892). Under the influence of Böcklin he turned to painting and he developed an imaginary world of mythology and symbolism in his work. In 1889 he exhibited at the Münchner Glaspalast and he won a gold medal for "Wächter des Paradieses". In 1892 he was one of the founding members of the Secession in Munich and his painting "Die Sünde" was a sensation at the exhibition of the Secession in 1893. In 1895 he succeeded Wilhelm von Lindenschmit at the Academy and he influenced a new generation of painters, among them Albers, Kandinsky and Klee. His affair with Anna Maria Brandmaier resulted in the birth of a daughter, Mary Franziska Anna. The child was given into the care of Mary Lindpaintner, the widow of a physician. In 1897 Von Stuck maried Mary Lindpaintner and his daughter grew up in his own house. In 1904 he and his wife formally adopted her after a legal battle against young Mary's natural mother. He also adopted the two children from Mary's first marriage, Olga and Otto. From 1896 to 1891 he provided illustrations for Jugend magazine. At the Prinzregentenstrasse in Munich (1897/1898) Stuck built himself a villa by his own design. He also designed the furniture, for which he received a gold medal in 1900 at the World Exhibition in Paris. In 1906 he was knighted. The Stuck Villa is now a Jugendstil museum.
