Educated in England and Germany. He made his debut in London in 1876 and in 1882 he married the actress Helen Maud Holt, who often appeared on the stage together with him. His successes began after he became actor-manager at the Haymarket Theatre, where he played Hamlet and other parts. From 1897 on he had his own theatre, "His Majesty's Theatre". From all over the world people would come to see him in his Shakespearean productions.

In 1904 he founded the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) and in 1909 he was knighted. He had several illegitimate children, among them director Carol Reed and Peter Reed (the father of Oliver Reed).
