Fred Terry was a younger brother of the famous actress Ellen Terry. He debuted in 1880 at the Lyceum Theatre in "Twelfth Night", next to Ellen. In 1882 he played several parts in Shakespeare plays. From 1890 until 1894 he was a member of Herbert Beerbohm Tree's company. In 1900 he married the actress Julia Neilson and they performed together between 1900 and 1930. The actors Dennis Neilson-Terry and Phyllis Neilson-Terry are their children. In 1912 he fell seriously ill, but after he recovered in 1913 he continued his career.
