Jan Cox was born in The Hague in the Netherlands but spent most of his life in Belgium and in the United States. In 1945 he was one of the founders of the group Jeune Peinture Belge and around 1950 he was briefly involved in the CoBRa movement.

In 1950 he went to New York. He returned to Europe to live in Rome, but in 1956 he became head of the Painting Department of the Mujseum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1974 he returned to Belgium where he worked full time as a painter. During his life he frequently suffered from severe depressions and in 1980 he killed himself, aged 61.
