Aloys Obrist sutdied music in Weimar and in Berlin and in 1892 he was promoted in Berlin. After his studies he was the musical director of the Stadttheater in Augsburg and from 1895 to 1900 he was music director at the Staatstheater in Stuttgart. From 1901 to 1907 he was the curator of the Liszt Museum in Weimar.

He had married Hilde Jenicke in 1893, but he started an affair with the opera singer Anna Sutter. Sutter ended the affair in 1909. In 1910 he entered her appartment and after she turned him down again he shot her and then himself.

His monument at the Historischer Friedhof in Weimar was designed by his brother, the sculptor Hermann Obrist. His collection of musical instruments is now at the Bachhaus in Eisenach.
