Antoine Laurant Dantan and his brother Jean Pierre Dantan were both sons of a wood carver. Antoine entered the École des beaux-arts de Paris in 1816, where François-Joseph Bosio was his teacher. In 1828 he won de Prix de Rome.

He sculpted busts of Charles X (1824) and Bellini (1832). His statues of Jacques Lemercier and Philippe Delorme were placed at the courtyard of the Louvre. For the church of the Madeleine he created a statue of the archangel Raphael. His son Édouard Dantan (1848-1897) was a moderately successful painter.
