Tibor Csernus was the son of a locksmith. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Budapest and exhibited frequently in that city. In 1957 and 1958 he visited Paris and in 1964 he moved there permanently.

His painting style showed influences of Caravaggio, Velasquez and Rembrandt. He illustrated many covers for paperbacks published by Gallimard, especially for science fiction novels. He received the Kossuth Prize in 1997.
