August Richter started studying Medicine in Göttingen in 1760. From 1764 to 1766 he travelled to Paris, London, Oxford, Amsterdan and Groningen to study. After his return he was appointed associate professor in Göttingen and in 1771 he obtained a full professorship in Medicin. He published several important works and in 1776 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen.

In 1789 he opened a surgical clinin in Göttingen known as the Freimaurer-Krankenhaus. He also became physician to the king of Hanover in that year. Among his students were Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland und Karl Gustav Himly.
