Jules Chambrelant studied in Paris at the École polytechnique and the École nationale des ponts et chaussées. He started working as a civil engineer in Périgueux and from 1840 he worked in the Gironde. During his travels he noticed the differences in the landscape. Subsequently he was responsible for irrigation projects in the Gironde where water from flooded areas was led to dry areas.

In 1865 he was appointed chef ingénieur and in 1879 inspecteur général. He was a member of the Académie des sciences and of the Société nationale d'agriculture.
