Since the beginning of the 19th century the Sgarabotto family was known for its production of violins. Gaetano Sgarabotto devoted his whole life to making violins and he produced over 700 violins and cellos.

He worked in Vicenza before he moved to Milan in 1901 shortly after he married the singer Ines Larghini. In Milan he worked for Leandro Bisiach until he 1905. In 1905 he returned to Vicenza. In 1926 he went to Parma. In 1928 he founded the Parma School of Violin Making together with his son Pietro. It was associated with the Conservatory of Parma. After a successful start it closed in 1936 after potential pupils preferred the school in Cremona.

He continued working until his seventies and built several violins in Brescia during the 1950s. He died in Parma in 1959.
