Maximilian Auer was the son of the porcelain painter Anton Auer, who initially educated him. After his father died, his mother Juliane married Johann Andreas Schmeller. Hermann Mitterer continued his education and in 1823 he was employed by the Porcelain Manufactury Nymphenburg. In 1829 he continued the work his father started and he copied paintings from the Royal Collection on porcelain.

In later years he also worked as an watercolour painter and as a glass painter. Problems with his eyes finally forced him to abandon his work as a painter.
