May Prinsep was the daughter of Charles Robert Prinsep, the advocate-general of Calcutta. Her mother Louisa White was the daugter of an officer. She was the niece of the painter Valentine Prinsep.

She frequently stayed with the Cameron family at the Isle of Wight and Julia Margaret Cameron photographed her repeatedly. In 1867 and 1869 she was painted by G.F. Watts. In 1868 Valentine Prinsep painted her. In 1874 she married the stockbroker Andrew Kinsman Hichens. She was painted by Frederic Leighton in 1885.

Her husband died on 27 August 1906. She married Hallam Tennyson, Alfred Tennyson's son, at Southampton on 27 August 1918. She died in 1920 in Freshwater. Her ashes were placed in the Watts Memorial Chapel in Compton next to those of her first husband.
