Heinrich Bauer studied law but he switched to classical archaeology. He was promoted in 1967 in Marburg by Heinrch Drerup. During his career he used his own system and he mostly worked alone.

He was based in Rome where his central object of study was the Basilica Aemilia at the Forum Romanum. He succeeded in a reconstruction of its fassade. He studied several other Roman monuments but his sudden death in 1993 prevented the publication of his research.
