Giorgio Mameli was an admiral in the Piedmontese navy. He joined the navy as a boy and in 1825 he took part in the expedition to Tripoli under Francesco Sivori. This earned him the cross of the military order of Savoy. At his second home Genoa he married Afelaide Zoagli (1805-1884) who came from an the old aristocratic Zoagli family from that city. Their first born son Goffredo Mameli was a poet and a martyr of the Risorgimento.

In 1849 he was promoted to rear admiral and elected into the Sardinian parliament. After the death of his son Goffredo he had enough of politics and military life and he ended his career.
