Danny Gürtler worked at the Burgtheater in Vienna before he came to Berlin. In 1902 he played the part of Danton in "Dantons Tod" by George Büchner at the Volksbühne in Berlin.

His poetry was published in "König der Bohême" and he was best known as a cabaret artist, who propagated against the army, the church and other institutions. Between 1902 and 1907 he was very popular.

In 1907 he tried to cut his veins with a piece of glass in front of an audience. He was locked up in a mental home and he died there in 1917. Many sources on the Internet claim that he died in 1971 and the he played in several movies in 1920/1921, but his tombstone states that he died in 1917.
