Victor François Desvignes studied music and for many years he worked as musical director at operetta theatres in several French cities. In 1835 he founded a conservatory in Metz that soon gained such a good reputation that it was taken over by the state and became a branch of the conservatory in Paris.

As a composer he wrote chamber music, choral pieces, large orchestral works and two operas. He died in Metz in 1853, only 48 years old.
