Paul Bezanson was the son of captain André Bezanson. After his studies he worked as a trader and he often travelled in the Rhine departments. In 1860 he became a memeber of the city council of Metz. After the annexation by Germany in 1871 he kept his position as municipal councilor and on 25 October 1871 he succeeded Philippe Félix Marechal as mayor of Metz.

Despite becoming a citizen of the German Empire he obtained the Legion of Honor on 16 March 1872. On 2 January 1877 Baron Julous von Freyberg (1832-1912) replaced him as mayor of Metz, but eight days later he was elected into the Reichstag for Metz-Campagne. In 1878 and in 1881 he was re-elected. In 1882 he died in Metz.
