Friedrich Pützer studied with Karl Henrici in Aachen. He came to Darmstadt in 1897 where he worked at the Hochschule. In 1900 he became a professor there. He held several other positions, but he is best remembered as the architect of the first skyscraper in Germany. It was the Turmhaus that was built in 1915-1916 for Carl Zeiss Jena AG in Jena. It counted 11 floors and was 43 meters high.

In 1905 he had created the Pützer-Turm at the Hochschulstraße in Darmstadt that is now owned by Merck. He designed many other buildings in Darmstadt. From 1918 to 1919 he was the rector of the Hochschule in Darmstadt.
