Erwin Nasse studied philology and economics. In 1846 he became a member of the fraternity "Friderica Bonn". In 1854 he was habilitated as a private teacher in Bonn. In 1856 he obtained a professorship in Basel. In the fall of the same year he moved to the University of Rostock. In 1860 he obtained a professorship in Bonn. In 1872-1873 he was the rectof of the University of Bonn.

He was a founding member of the Vereins für Sozialpolitik (Association for Social Policy) and became its president in 1874. He was also a city councilor in Bonn and a member of the Free Conservative Party, that he represented in the Prussian Chamber of Deputies from 1869 to 1879. In 1889 he became a member of the preußischen Herrenhaus but he died before he could attend a meeting.
