Norbert Christian attended Helene Lackner's acting school and debuted at the Stadttheater in Greifswald in 1943. Between 1949 and 1952 he was engaged in Rostock, where he also worked as a director. In 1952 he joined Bertold Brech's Berliner Ensemble and he stayed there until 1971. In 1961 he received the Art Prize of the DDR.

His first wife was Myriam Sello-Christian (1917-1970) and the actor Michael Christian (b.1947) is their son. His second wife was Erdmute Schmidt (b.1943). He died in 1976 in Berlin, aged 51.
