Carl von Mérode came from a noble Belgian family. From 1870 to 1876 he studied at the Academy in Vienna, where Anselm Feuerbach was his teacher from 1873 onwards. In 1875 he had a daughter, Cléo, who would become a famous ballerina.

In his work he often portrayed scenes from life in Vienna. His work was popular and he received many prizes and awards. In 1900 he started a painting school for women together with Adolf Kaufmann.
