Gret Kalous was the daughter of the painter Robert Scheffer. At her father's painting school she met Josf Kalous and she married him in 1913. In 1915 she founded the Modekurs Kalous and she soon became a succesful fashion designer. Between the two wars she was one of the best known fashion designers of Vienna. she contributed to magazines and she exported her products to other countries. She continued her father's school until 1949 as a school for fashion drawing. The art historian Margarethe Poch-Kalous (1915-1974) was her daughter.
