Josef Niessen studied composition and church music in Berlin and Cologne. From 1945 until the late 1960s he worked as a conductor for Bavarian radio. After that he worked as a free musician and conductor.

In 1950 he wrote the music for the movie "Mitternachts-Venus". In 1954 he married the actress Ilse Werner, but a divorce followed in 1966. From 1970 onwards he used the name Dave Daffodil for his work as a producer and he made many records with his studio orchestra.
