Eugenie Besalla was a mezzo-soprano who was educated at the Stern'schen Konservatorium in Berlin. She debuted in 1920 in Aachen as Fricka in "Rheingold". In 1922 she was engaged at the Volksoper in Vienna and she stayed there until 1925. After an engagement at the Teatro Liceo Barcelona she worked in Braunschweig from 1926 to 1927.

In 1932 she returend to Aachen where she worked until 1937. At that time Herbert von Karajan was the conductor. She described Von Karajan as headstrong but sympathetic. She married the opera singer Anton Ludwig (1888-1957) and the opera singer Christa Ludwig (1928-2021) is their daughter. Christa Ludwig later stated that her mother had spoiled her voice in the part of Elektra under Von Karajan.
