Clara Heese was the daughter of the actors Rudolf Heese (d.1870) and Marie Heese-Herbold (1825-/29/10/1853). She debuted at the Hoftheater in Dresden. She continued her career in Meiningen and at the Burgtheater in Vienna. From 1882 onwards she was engaged at the Hoftheater in Munich.
She is best known for playing the title part during the premiere of Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler". Ibsen was present and it was said at the time that he was dissatisfied with her performance. The reviews were mostly negative.
In 1892 it was announced in the newspapers that prince Ludwig of Bavaria wanted to marry her, but during the same year he married Barbara Barth. She died in 1921 and was buried at the Alter Nördlicher Friedhof in Munich.
