Rose Cleveland was the sister of Grover Cleveland, who became president of the USA in 1885. Because he was unmarried she acted as First Lady until he married Frances Folsom in 1886.

In 1890 she started a lesbian affair with the rich widow Evangeline Simpson. Their relationship ended when Evangeline married the clergyman Henry Benjamin Whipple, but after his death in 1901 they came together again. She died in 1919 of the Spanish fever. Evangeline Whipple was buried next to her in 1930 at the English Cemetery in Bagni di Lucca, Toscany.
