Clara Salbach was trained by Minona Frieb-Blumauer. She debuted in 1880 in Weimar. She held her first engagement in Hanau and worked in Mainz from 1881 to 1882. In 18882 she went to Leipzig and in 1889 she moved on to Dresden, where she became very popular.

In 1899 she married Jean Hofmann and she continued her career as Clara Hofmann-Salbach. They lived at the Villa Salbach in Niederlößnitz (now Radebeul) near Dresden. She left the stage in 1932 after an engagement of 43 years in Dresden and she died in that city in 1944.
