Sophie zu Hohenlohe-Bartenstein was the daughter of Ludwig Leopold, Fürst zu Hohenlohe-Bartenstein (1731-1799). She was born in her parents' castle. She dedicated her life to religion and she settled in Rome, where she worked for the poor. She died unmarried in 1836 in Rome.

She was buried at the Campo Santo Teutonico in Rome. In 2019 her grave turned out to be empty after it was opened following an anonymous tip in the case of Emanuela Orlandi, an Italian girl that disappeared in 1983.
