Friedrich Jodl studied philosophy, art history and general history in Munich. From 1873 onwards he taught at the Bavariant Military Academy. In 1885 he became a professor in Prague and from 1896 he was a professor in Vienna, where he lived until his death.

He was a member of the Ethische Bewegung (Ethical Movement) and a psychological positivist. He was also in favour of education without a religious component.
