Paul Klinger studied architecture, but his through his school friend Helmut Käutner be became interested in the theatre. In 1929 he debuted as an actor. He was engaged at the Deutsche theater in Berlin and in 1933 he also started his movie career in "Du sollst nicht begehren". In 1936 he was in "Fridericus" and in 1942 in "Die goldene Stadt".

After the war he found it hard to obtain further movie parts, but in the 1950s his popularity increased. In 1954 he appeared in "Das fliegende Klassenzimmer". In 1the 1960s he mostly appeared on television. He died in Munich in 1970.
