Karl Theodor von Küstner studied at the Thomasschule in Leipzig before he studied law at the universities of Leipzig and Göttingen. In 1813 he entered the army and he participated in the war against Napoleon. From 1817 to 1828 he directed the Stadttheater in Leipzig without receiving any payment for it. Under his direction it became one of the leading theatres in Germany.

In 1830 he was engaged in Darmstadt at the director of the Court Theatre. But when the court withdrew its support in 1831 he resigned. He moved to Munich where he managed the Court Theatre from 1833 to 1842. In 1837 he was enobled by king Ludwig I of Bavaria. In 1842 he was appointed general director of the Royal Theatre in Berlin. He retired in 1851 and lived in Berlin and Leipzig afterwards. He died in 1864 in Leipzig.
